Yakutat AYEA (YAYEA)

About Us

The YAYEA chapter was formed in the fall of 2005, after several teens attended the AYEA Summer Get Together on global warming. The Yakutat Tlingit Tribe co-sponsors our chapter and provides us a lot of support. We have been involved with many efforts to make Yakutat a better place to live, including: organizing a Summer Coastal Clean-Up project in which we cleaned beaches and documented how much garbage we recovered; our Week Without Plastics project in which we raise awareness among community members about alternatives to plastics and trying to reduce plastic bag use; and catering Elders' meetings and putting on a community potluck at Yakutat's annual Fairweather Day. We have also engaged teens on global warming and this year will be working on the 3-2-1 Campaign to get people to reduce emissions through personal action

Get Involved!

YAYEA meets every other week at both the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe office and various spots around town. Please contact our advisors for more information.

Week Without Plastics, April 21-25, 2008

YAYEA has reusable bags available at the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe office, available for purchase during business hours. To promote the use of the bags over disposable plastic bags, folks who use their bags put their name into a drawing — which occurs monthly — for prizes. Our last drawing had about 120 names for the month of March; so we saved at least 120 plastic bags from being used!
