Verner Wilson

Global Warming Leader

Verner Wilson is a Yup'ik Eskimo born and raised in Dillingham, Alaska. He is a 2008 graduate in Environmental Studies at Brown University. As an indigenous person, he has personally witnessed the negative effects of climate change on Native culture, including invasive species and eroding coastlines that endanger Alaskan villages. He has been involved with AYEA for over 6 years, and has worked with his peers to pressure our state leaders to take action on climate change through his 2005 Letter to our Leaders. AYEA has helped shaped his life goals and has deeply inspired him to help other youth take action and educate others.

Bryce Timm

Political Activist & Trainer ('08)

Bryce Timm has lived in Ketchikan, Alaska most of his life. When he was in eighth grade, he participated in AYEA's Civics & Conservation Summit. Bryce got hooked on politics and has been a Trainer at the Civics Summit four times! In 2007 he traveled to Newhalen to work with rural peers on global warming, helping teens implement AYEA's 3-2-1 Efficiency! pledge in ten households. Bryce will work with the Youth Employment in Parks program this summer, leading teens through field projects and helping facilitate civic engagement training.

Zoe Fuller, Aviva Hirsch, and Brittany Walker

Plastics Crusaders ('10)

Aviva Hirsch, Brittany Walker, and Zoe Fuller have taken plastics "into their own hands" by advocating for sustainable alternatives in Alaska.

Zoe chaired AYEA's Rethink Plastics campaign;

Brittany helped develop educational materials about the impacts of plastics; and

Aviva urged legislators to create policies on plastic pollution. "It's not about paper versus plastic, it's about sustainable versus disposable," says Hirsch.
