Tell us about the Homer Global Warming Task Force and what it does.
I applied to the Task Force because I think it is important that our city — every city — begin addressing the major issue of global warming. It is going to be in the forefront of major issues in the very close future. Mostly, twenty or thirty years from now, I don't want my future self to look back in regret, knowing that we hadn't done more to save what our resources.
The Task Force was established to assess and make recommendations to the city of Homer regarding the steps we can take on a local level to make the town and its residents more efficient and eco-friendly. We are not actually the ones who are taking action on each subject; but, by the end of 2007 in December, we are supposed to have an entire proposal to present to the city council.
Who else is on the Task Force?
There are about twelve people on the Task Force. Their professions range from biologists and other scientists, photographers, ministers, politicians, and fishermen--but they all share the same reverence and passion for the outside world and are devoted in trying to save it.
What will you propose to the Task Force to address global warming?
So far, we've split the Task Force up into separate committees. They're not all entirely solidified yet, but so far they include Education and Outreach, Recycling, Building Land Ordinances, and Water (Rivers, Ocean, Freshwater).
