Cool Study Abroad ProgramsThe School for Field Studies : Since 1980, The School for Field Studies (SFS) has been teaching students to address critical environmental problems using an interdisciplinary, experiential approach to education. We take our students out of the classroom and into communities around the world to explore and examine the interdependent cultural, economic, and ecological aspects of real-world problems. In the end, our students leave their SFS program with a deeper understanding of the complexity of environmental problems, and a unique perspective on what it really takes to develop long-term conservation solutions. Deadlines: First come, first served — for semester programs April 1, and May 1 for summer programs. SIT Study Abroad: The mission of the School for International Training (SIT) is to prepare students to be interculturally effective leaders, professionals, and citizens. In so doing, SIT fosters a worldwide network of individuals and organizations committed to responsible engagement in a changing world. Deadlines: Jan. 15 for Fall and Summer terms; April 15 for Spring terms. Living Routes: Bring your education to life by studying in Ecovillages around the world. Ecovillages are ecological communities that provide ideal campuses for students to learn about real-world issues including sustainable development, green building, organic agriculture and women's empowerment. Learn to live in harmony with local environments as you investigate personal and community based solutions to real world issues with one of the most innovative environmental study abroad programs. Deadlines: Rolling admission Center for Global Education: The goal of all of our educational programs is the empowerment of the participants to work for personal and social transformation as s/he best sees fit. The purpose of education abroad is to empower and prepare participants to become global citizens. Deadlines: April 1 for Fall Programs; October 15 for Spring Programs Wild Rockies Field Institute: The mission of the Wild Rockies Field Institute is to offer academically rigorous, field-based courses that help to develop engaged, informed citizens and strong leaders capable of addressing our society's complex social and environmental issues. MiscellaneousOur Time 2008 Political Activism Workshops: The Hip Hop Association from NYC and folks from the Anchorage Urban League of Young Professionals are teaming-up to put on a series of sweet workshops all about why politics matters and how young people can make a difference. EKWOK LODGE FLY FISHING & GUIDE ACADEMY: The first Nushagak River Fly Fishing & Assistant Guide Academy will be held August 3 - 10 at Ekwok Lodge, for people interested in learning the techniques of fly fishing and sport fish guiding. Applicants from the Bristol Bay region will be given priority placement. Those selected will be notified early summer 2008. All expenses during the camp are included in the camp cost. Travel to and from Ekwok is not included. Scholarship opportunities will be available. Get hands-on job experience. Find employment in our growing tourism industry. Spend a week in Bristol Bay with licensed fishing guides on the Nushagak River learning the techniques of fly fishing and sport fish guiding. Learn from experienced professionals how to interact with clients, how to incorporate traditional knowledge in your Fly fishing and guiding, and what to expect in the life of a guide. Other camp activities include safety training, steams, river ecology, storytelling, and skiff rides. Opportunities for employment as a guide in summer 2009 may be available to those successfully completing the camp. For ages 15-22. Deadline to Apply is July 14. www.visitbristolbay.org. PolitiCorps Summer 2008: PolitiCorps Summer is a 10-week boot camp consisting of hands-on campaign skills training, innovative public policy intensives, and real-world applications of leadership skills and campaign savvy. PolitiCorps strives to create the next generation of progressive leaders. The Summer Institute is based in Portland, Oregon. Global Youth Service Info: April-May. Formerly called National and Global Youth Service, provides meaningful opportunities for youth across the state of Alaska. Programs include summer camps and field courses based in beautiful Cordova, surrounded by the rich ecosystems of the Copper River Delta and Prince William Sound. Program offerings include From the Forest to the Sea Science Camp I, *June 9-13*, ages 12-15, $425; Oceanography of the Prince William Sound, *June 23-July 2*, minimum age 15, $995 + optional undergraduate credits.
