Trail Work Volunteer Day

August 16 - TRAIL WORK VOLUNTEER DAY will be held from 9am to Noon at the Helen Louise McDowell Sanctuary - Anchorage. Projects include New trail construction, trail corridor maintenance and placing/tamping/raking gravel on the new loop. Directions: From the New Seward Highway: Go East on 36th Avenue, Turn Right (South) onto Rhone St., Turn Left (East) onto Crescent St., Turn Right (South) onto Helevetia St., Park above junction with St. Gotthard, and Follow signs to trailhead. Do bring: 2 liters of water, layers for warmth & cooling, rain gear, work gloves, and work boots. Volunteer Recycling Coordinator

The Salvation Army of Alaska is seeking an energetic, responsible, dependable volunteer to expand it's internal recycling program and transport recyclables to the Smurfit Recycling Center in Anchorage once or twice a week. Volunteers will need to use their own vehicle for transportation. Volunteers must have a valid Alaska Driver's License, be able to lift up to a maximum of 50lbs and be willing to commit to at least 3 hours a week. SEAPRO Oil Spill Responder

Protect Southeast Alaskan waters, shores, and wildlife through emergency response to oil spills. Responders engage in wildlife hazing, operate response equipment, and perform emergency operation duties as part of an award-winning, US Coast Guard certified Oil Spill Response Organization. Must be age 18 or older. Must live within Southeast Alaska. No experience/education required. Training is provided FREE of cost, and includes 24 hours of HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) certification training, plus 8+ hour training in response techniques. www.idealist.org.

Our sole mission is to uplift the human spirit. We strive to do this by educating, inspiring, entertaining and informing 24 hours a day seven days a week. Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges

Want to help Alaska's environment and do something fun too? The Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges are seeking volunteers to conduct a variety of educational events on Alaska's remote national wildlife refuges. Examples include

  • Float the Kwethluk River (Yukon Delta NWR) with local teens and teach them about fish and stream ecology.
  • Greet visitors at the Coldfoot Visitor Center (Kanuti NWR) and teach them about our amazing arctic ecosystem.
  • Assist Yukon Flats NWR with designing curriculum about moose for local schools.

The Nature Conservancy

The Conservancy is looking for a plant-savvy volunteer to manage a native plant and low maintenance garden at our Anchorage office this summer. Duties could include implementing the overall garden plan, labeling plants, developing interpretive signs, and regular maintenance (including weeding). VOLUNTEER GROUPS NEEDED 2008 STEWARDSHIP "Work Day" PROGRAM

Stream Watch, founded in 1994, has won national awards and recognition as an important educational program that helps to protect the riparian areas of two world-class sockeye salmon fisheries on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula -the Russian and Kenai Rivers. Groups of up to 20 are needed to help with easy to moderate tasks including picking up trash and monofilament line, mending fences, and carrying around light-weight water pumps and hoses to aid in restoration efforts. MONITOR SEABIRDS ON THE ALASKA MARITIME NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Volunteers needed 1 May to at least mid September 2008 for long-term seabird monitoring project on Chowiet Island. Sorry, no flexibility on dates.
 
Location: Chowiet Island (Semidi Is, AK Peninsula). Living conditions are primitive and crew live in a small cabin. Weather is usually cold and wet. The successful candidate is the type of person looking for an extremely remote experience with a like-minded crew of energetic, well-conditioned and knowledgeable people.
 
Project: On-going program, monitoring breeding chronology, reproductive success, population changes, adult survival, and food habits of up to 15 species of seabirds.
 
Skills: Prefer applicants with (or working toward) a degree in wildlife biology or related field and with some field experience.
