Global Warming Solutions

"As Alaska's teens, we have a big stake in the future of the state. 3-2-1 can help Alaska cut global warming pollution and do our part to fight global warming."
—Megan Waggoner, AYEA member

What is AYEA doing to fight global warming?

For the past few years global warming has been a major focus of AYEA. We've worked on a number of projects, both large and small, to address global warming by educating and raising awareness, promote energy efficiency and clean energy, and push our state and national leaders to take action

AYEA Projects

  • 3-2-1 Efficiency! Pledge — In the fall of 2006, AYEA teens wanted to promote global warming awareness and energy efficiency, and we've done just that with this ongoing project. As of April 2007, AYEA teens collected pledges from 2000 individuals to replace 3 incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, turn their thermostat down 2 degrees in the winter, and unplug 1 household appliance when not in use. This will result in an annual prevention of almost 10 million pounds of carbon from entering our atmosphere. Take the pledge here.

  • The Global Warming Campaign — In the spring of 2006, AYEA reached out to schools all across the state and educated peers on the impacts of global warming on Alaska. We also collected signatures for our Letter to Our Leaders Petition from over 5000 high school students from 130 communities. The project won the President's Environmental Youth Award and was cited by Senator Murkowski on a radio show when she was explaining the potential need for mandatory carbon dioxide limits.
